Jisub Kim is an artist from South Korea whose thematic interests encompass reality, autonomy and boundaries. Since childhood, he has been fascinated by artificial representations of the real world, including miniatures and simulation computer games. But for his art, Kim places importance on the tactile sense, which is why he chooses a rather classical method of painting.
Growing up in a Korean society where he had inner conflicts with the strong culture of collectivism, he has been preoccupied with questions of individual existence and autonomy. His military service in the JSA*, an extraordinary environment, has also brought him to reflect on social confrontations, conflicts, and borders.
Jisub Kim holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Korea National University of Arts and a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Braunschweig University of Art. Currently, he lives and works in Berlin.
*Joint Security Area, the only area where soldiers from North and South Korea work together on guard duty.
